The West of Ireland Tour

Whether we pick you up from your flight at Shannon Airport or collect you from any other location in Ireland, a Hand in Hand tour of the West of Ireland will stay with you for a lifetime. Painters, poets, and musicians have flocked to Galway and Connemara for centuries, and many of them never leave. Drawn by the unique Atlantic light, the authentic Gaelic culture, and the spirit of the locals, devotees of the West of Ireland fall under its spell.

West of Ireland Tour – Day 1

We deliver an experience of the west of Ireland in two classic tours that are best experienced over separate days. On the first day, we bring you on the Lough Inagh Drive, which immerses you in the true spirit of the Gaelic heartland of Connemara. Having collected you at Shannon Airport, we proceed to the unforgettable Cliffs of Moher, which rise to 214 metres (702 feet) at their peak and narrowly missed out on a place among the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

We then make our way to Galway, passing through the otherworldly limestone landscapes of the Burren National Park as we follow the beautiful Black Head driving route.

After lunching in Ballyvaughan or Clarinbridge, we continue to Oughterard, considered the gateway to Connemara. We will show you the bridge from John Ford’s The Quiet Man before taking you on the spectacular Lough Inagh Drive, with its mystical boglands and the rugged isolation of the Maumturk Mountains and the Twelve Bens. We then overnight in either Kylemore or Tully Cross.

West of Ireland Tour – Day 2

Day two of your Hand in Hand tour of the West of Ireland begins with a visit to 19th-century monastic Benedictine abbey at Kylemore, which features an impressive neo-Gothic church, Victorian walled gardens, and the abbey itself. The abbey was established for Benedictine nuns who escaped from Belgium during World War 1.

Would you like to find out more about Connemara and what its true meaning is? You can explore the region and its significance at the Connemara National Park Visitor Centre in Letterfrack, where a tour of the exhibition centre will give you fascinating insights into this unique place. After that, it’s time for lunch in Clifden, the capital of Connemara.

In the afternoon, we travel the scenic coastal route to Ballyconneely and see where Alcock & Brown landed in 1919, having completed the first ever nonstop, east-to-west transatlantic flight. We also stop at the Connemara Smokehouse before making our way further along the ocean drive to Roundstone and Ballynahinch Castle.

When we arrive in Galway City, you will have time to explore the Spanish Arch, the Claddagh, and Eyre Square—all of which are highlights of this walled, 12th-century city. Enjoy the aptly-named Shop Street before dining on Quay Street and returning to your hotel in Galway.
